Free Christmas toys for families who need help
These programs give new toys and gifts to children when a family can't afford them. They are run locally, so dates and rules differ by town. The common thread: sign up early.
| Program | What families get | How to sign up | When and the catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toys for Tots | New toys for children whose families can't afford gifts | Find your county's campaign on toysfortots.org and use its request form | Requests usually open in October and close in early December; each local campaign sets its own rules |
| The Salvation Army Angel Tree | Toys and clothes picked from each child's wish list by a donor | Register with your local Salvation Army; bring ID and your children's birth dates or ages | Registration is often only a few days in October or November, so call early |
| USPS Operation Santa | A gift from a volunteer who adopts your child's letter | Mail the letter to 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888 with a stamp and return address | Not every letter is adopted; mail by the first week of December |
| Shop with a Cop and fire department toy drives | A shopping trip or toys handed out by local police or firefighters | Kids are usually picked through schools and local agencies; ask your school counselor | Local and not everywhere |
| Churches, community centers and 211 | Toy giveaways, holiday meals and gift boxes | Call or text 211, or check your town's site in November | Most ask you to register ahead |

How do I sign up for Toys for Tots in 2026?
Go to toysfortots.org, find the campaign for your county, and use its toy request form. Requests usually open in October and close in early December, and each local campaign sets its own rules, so sign up as early as you can.
Can I get free Christmas gifts for my kids if money is tight?
Yes. Toys for Tots, the Salvation Army Angel Tree and many churches and fire departments give new toys to children in families who need help. Calling or texting 211 is the fastest way to find the ones near you. Sign up in October or November, before lists close.
Are there free Christmas gifts for adults?
A few: free samples by mail, free holiday treats in restaurant apps, and free gifts at store events. Most "free gift" promotions for adults need a purchase, and TrySpree marks those.
Are the free Christmas gifts on this page really free?
The toy programs and workshops cost nothing. Some listed offers need an order or an app sign-up. Each listing on TrySpree says which kind it is.
