Which Black Friday freebies are really free?
Black Friday mixes giveaways with deals. This table sorts the usual kinds by what they ask of you.
| Kind | What it usually is | How you get it | Really free? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early-bird giveaways | A gift card, tote or small gift for the first shoppers through the door | Be in line when the store opens on Black Friday | Usually no purchase, but limited to the first few customers |
| Mystery coupons and game cards | A scratch-off card or envelope with a discount or a prize | Handed out at department stores on Black Friday weekend | The card is free; most prizes are discounts on a purchase |
| Gift with purchase | A beauty bag, tumbler or tote added to an order | Spend the stated amount online or in store | No: it comes with an order |
| Gift card with purchase | A store gift card when you buy a set product or spend a set amount | Shown in the weekly ad and on the shelf tag | No: you pay first and spend the card later |
| Free shipping days | No shipping charge, sometimes with no minimum | Automatic at checkout during the sale window | Only on things you buy |
| Free outdoor days | Free entry to some state parks or outdoor events on the day after Thanksgiving | Check your state parks site for a fee-free day | Yes, where offered |
Target Black Friday swag bag and other doorbuster freebies
Early-bird gifts are the one Black Friday freebie that usually needs no purchase. They go to the first shoppers in line at each store, so the count matters more than the gift. These stores have handed something out in past years; check each one's 2026 ad before you set an alarm.
| Store | What early shoppers have gotten | How it has worked | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target | A free reusable bag or small gift for early in-store shoppers, in some years | Handed out at the door on Black Friday morning while supplies last | Not every year. If there is a 2026 swag bag, Target's Black Friday ad and app will say how many per store |
| Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's | A free gift for the first shoppers, plus free Santa photos and kids crafts that weekend | Be in line at opening; Santa photos need a free reservation | Gift counts are per store; photo packages cost extra |
| JCPenney | Coupon envelopes or scratch-off cards handed to early shoppers, sometimes with a small gift | Pick one up at the door on Black Friday | Most prizes are money off a purchase |
| Ulta Beauty and Sephora | Free beauty bags and deluxe samples added to orders | Spend the posted amount online or in store | Gift with purchase: you have to buy something |
| Kohl's | Kohl's Cash to spend later | Earned on what you spend during the sale | Only free if you were buying anyway, and it expires |
Small Business Saturday freebies (November 28)
Local shops mark Small Business Saturday with free coffee, cookies, tote bags and raffles for people who walk in. Downtown associations often post a map of who is giving what. Check your town's chamber of commerce or main street page the week of Thanksgiving.
What you can get free on Cyber Monday, Nov 30
The Monday sales happen online, so the freebies are mostly attached to an order. Here is what each kind costs.
| What | How it works | Really free? |
|---|---|---|
| Free shipping with no minimum | Many stores drop the minimum for the weekend; it applies at checkout | Only on things you buy |
| Free gift added to an online order | A tote, mini or bonus item when the cart passes a set amount | No: it comes with an order |
| Free samples with beauty and supplement orders | Pick two or three at checkout, or ask in the order notes | Free with an order |
| Free PC games | The Epic Games Store gives away games every week, all year, and keeps them in your library | Yes: a free account, no card |
| Free trials | Streaming and delivery memberships run longer trials over the holiday weekend | Free only if you cancel before it bills |

Tips for Black Friday freebies
- Read the ad for the giveaway count."First 100 customers" is per store, and the line forms early.
- Skip gifts with purchase you would not buy. A free tote on a $75 order is only worth it if you needed the $75 of stuff.
- Stack with free samples. Beauty and supplement shops add free samples to orders during sales; ask or pick them at checkout.

Can you get anything free on Black Friday?
Yes, but less than the ads suggest. Truly free things are early-bird giveaways for the first shoppers, scratch-off cards that cost nothing to pick up, store events and, in some states, free park entry. Most other Black Friday freebies are gifts with purchase or gift cards for spending a set amount.
Is a gift with purchase a freebie?
Not really: you only get it with an order, so it is part of a deal. TrySpree marks those offers as needing a purchase. Each listing on TrySpree says which kind it is.
How early do I need to be for Black Friday giveaways?
Giveaways go to a set number of people, often the first 50 to a few hundred per store, so arrive before opening. Stores post the count and opening time in their Black Friday ad a week or two ahead.
Are there Cyber Monday freebies?
Online, the closest things are free shipping, free gifts added to orders and free sample add-ons at beauty and supplement shops. They nearly all need an order, so they only help if you were buying anyway. Free weekly PC games and free trials you cancel in time are the main exceptions.
Is there a Target Black Friday swag bag in 2026?
Target has handed free bags or small gifts to early in-store shoppers in some years, but it is not an every-year promise. Target's Black Friday ad usually comes out in early to mid November; if a 2026 giveaway is in it, it will be added to the live list on this page.
When are Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday in 2026?
Thanksgiving lands on Thursday, November 26, so Black Friday follows on Friday, November 27. Next come Small Business Saturday on the 28th and Cyber Monday on the 30th.
