How to Spot a Fake Free Sample Offer

October 7, 2026

You see it in your feed: "FREE full-size perfume, just pay shipping!" Your thumb hovers. It looks legit. The brand logo is right there.

Here is the thing. Most free sample offers really are real. Brands hand out millions of samples every year because it works: once you try something, you are far more likely to buy it. But scammers know free stuff gets clicks too, and a fake offer can cost you a lot more than the sample is worth.

The good news? Fake offers almost always give themselves away. Here are the five red flags we look for before we list anything on TrySpree.

The one rule to remember: a real free sample never needs your card number. Ever.

Red flag #1: It wants your credit card

"Just cover $4.95 shipping" is the oldest trick in the book. What you are really agreeing to, buried in the fine print, is a monthly subscription. The first box shows up, then the monthly charges start, and canceling means hunting down a phone number that never seems to pick up.

A brand that wants you to try its product pays for the stamp. If a page asks for card or bank details, close the tab.

Your wallet stays closed. Real samples are free, shipping included.

Red flag #2: The website is not the brand's

Take two seconds and look at the address bar. Real offers live on the brand's own site, a big retailer, or a known sampling company. Be suspicious of made-up domains that mash a brand name together with words like free, gift, promo, or winner.

Red flag #3: "Congratulations, you've been selected!"

You cannot win a contest you never entered. Pop-ups that say you are the lucky 1,000th visitor, or that a "reward is reserved" for you, are fishing for your info. No real brand runs samples this way.

Red flag #4: The survey that never ends

Some pages make you answer question after question, then march you through a parade of "partner offers" before the sample is supposedly yours. That is not a sample. It is a lead-collection funnel, and the product at the end usually does not exist.

Quick test: if you have clicked "Next" more than three times and still have not entered a mailing address, walk away.

Red flag #5: It asks for things a sample doesn't need

To mail you something, a brand needs your name and address. Maybe your email. That's it. It does not need your Social Security number, your full date of birth, or your bank login. If the form feels like a loan application, it is not about samples.

What a real offer looks like

  • It is on the brand's official website or its verified social accounts.
  • It asks for name, email, and mailing address. Nothing more.
  • It tells you shipping takes a while, usually 4 to 8 weeks.
  • It has a privacy policy and an easy way to unsubscribe.
  • Supplies are limited, and it says so honestly instead of with a fake countdown timer.
The real thing: a little box on the doorstep a few weeks later.

One smart habit for every sample

Even honest offers mean more marketing email. Lots of TrySpree readers set up a separate email address just for samples. Your main inbox stays clean, and you can check the sample inbox once a week for shipping updates and coupons.
